We had a great week of flood tides this week but the fishing between Tuesday and Wednesday could not have been different. One day, there were fish tailing everywhere feeding furiously, and the next, not a fish to be found until the very bitter end of the evening. It just goes to show that the flood game isn’t always a cake walk.
For Tuesday, I was pleased to wake up and see that the tide was well above average. I had forecasted that it was likely to flood due to weather conditions, despite a relatively low predicted tide number. Like Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd) says in Anchorman “sixty percent of the time, it works every time.” I’ll just call it luck on that one.
Not only did it flood, it flooded good. I was planning on taking out Kenny, and a friend of mine, Shawn, who would be experiencing a flood tide for the first time. On the way out, my buddy Steven mentioned that he was lacking a ride, so I made sure it was fine with Kenny and Steven and offered to bring him with us. While the IPB is certainly capable of running four grown men on plane, no skiff can handle such a load for poling. We were going to have to head to some go-to wading spots and try our hand. We arrive at the first spot, jump out, and split ways. I opt to hold a camera rather than a rod, which produced some pretty good results (see the media page and watch “Spartina AlterniFlorida” for the full scoop!).
The first flat didn’t have much life on it, but Steven nabbed a decent fish. The second flat was gangbusters. We pulled up into a creek that permeates the flat. It was a spot I hadn’t been to in several years. Not for any other reason than sometimes, its good to just let a spot be. Fish have fins, and boy do they move. We follow the fish from area to area, year after year and its good to let a spot rest and not hammer it too hard.
The results were pretty obvious. As soon as we got onto the flat, the fish were there and fired up. Several slurps and splashes gave away the reds’ positions. Within minutes, Kenny hooked up to a great fish. No sooner did it come unglued than Steven connected to his second fish on for the evening. It was a solid upper-slot fish which was released to fight another day.

Tarpon. The very name spoken out loud incites a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. Moving pictures racing through the mind of giant leaping silver fish, violent head shaking and the sound of rattling gills. Perhaps the name evokes images of shots missed, schools of fish blowing out in a wad of commotion, or the many days where fish are observed crushing bait and free jumping for hours on end without a single hit on your repeatedly thrown lure.
Whether you think of tarpon fondly or with frustration, there is little argument that tarpon are one of the greatest gamefish to grace our oceans. Unfortunately, this year, due to various factors, I did not have occasion to pursue them as often as I would have liked. The few times I have looked hadn’t produced any success until this past Sunday.
The day started with familiarity, at a boat ramp I often use as the starting point for my pursuit of silver, at an hour that most would find indecent, but is often the norm for Kenny and I, and any others looking for tarpon.
Kenny and I changed strategy, rather than head straight for the beach and begin searching for tarpon, we opted to first gather mullet in case the pogies were scarce. After having caught a sufficient quantity of mullet, we proceeded to start the search in some of the usual locations which produced usual results – nothing.
We decided to move to another area, inshore and upriver to see if perhaps tarpon had migrated inshore. Still, no such luck. We opted to utilize the time to pursue redfish inshore while the tide was at the bottom and getting ready to turn incoming. We postulated that the tarpon would likely turn on and start to feed when the tide started to come in. For a while, we entertained ourselves by pursuing the fleeting wakes of spooky redfish in shallow water. With Kenny on the bow, we were able to connect with one, almost by mistake, but that fish thought better of the whole thing and found his way off of the hook. When we realized that the tide was well past midway high, we took off towards the beach again.
Upon arrival back at the beach, the situation was no less grim than it was initially. No pogies, no other types of bait, no obvious signs of tarpon, nothing. We decided to head towards another area we hypothesized might hold fish, and midway in getting there, As I’m scanning the waves to direct the boat safely, Kenny hollers, “STOP THE BOAT, THEY ARE RIGHT HERE!”
No sooner could I get off of plane than we started to see crashing tarpon, wrecking baits with reckless abandon. We shut down and began casting. The show was incredible. One of the greatest sights in fishing is to see aggressively feeding tarpon in the midst of a full on frenzy. It is, however, still no easy feat to connect to one, even in this chaotic setting, as tarpon seem to have zen-like focus in deciphering which baits or lures have hooks and which do not.
After some serious strategery, we were able to maneuver into position and start making some great casts. Eventually, Kenny connects. Big girl. Easily over 100. Jumps clean out of the water not 20 feet from the boat and inverts herself in midair. Hoots and hollers ensue. Engine on, throw it in gear, start the pursuit. Hearts sink when Kenny is suddenly sent backwards from the abrupt disconnection with the fish.

In March of 2008, Americans were on the precipice of experiencing a deep economic recession that would have lasting impacts on the country. In that same month at the urging of fraternity brothers who were also experimenting with hunting for the first time, I picked up my shotgun, purchased years before shortly after my eighteenth birthday, and headed to the woods for the first time in the hopes to actually kill something with it other than clay pigeons.
Since I was a child, I knew I wanted to hunt. I begged my parents for a Red Ryder bb gun and would kill songbirds in the backyard with it. Without guidance, my parents being immigrants from the middle east and unfamiliar with southern traditions, I knew not about wanton waste or the ethics of hunting. When I was a little older, I begged my father for a bow and arrow. On the advice of a salesman at Sports Authority, my father purchased me a Fred Bear double pulley compound bow. It had a thirty inch draw and a fifty pound pull weight with eighty percent letoff. I chased cottontails and squirrels with it, unsuccessfully, in the empty lots of my childhood neighborhood. I was big for a preteen, and I still use that bow to hunt to this day.
In the summer of 2005, when I turned eighteen, I worked as a medical assistant in my father’s medical practice to earn the money to purchase my first firearm. On my eighteenth birthday, my father gave me a bonus and doubled my paycheck to get me to my goal. I earned $1200 that summer, and after a lot of research and consideration, I decided to go for broke on my first gun and purchased a Benelli Montefeltro twelve gauge semi-auto, complete with stunning walnut stock and foregrip, aluminum receiver and a blued barrel. I was given the advice that “if I intended to stick with it, I should get a nice gun for my first.” I knew I intended to stick with it.
Back to 2008. I geared up to turkey hunt, purchasing camouflage for the first time in my life. Pants, shirt, jacket, lightweight gloves and a face cover all made their way into my closet. I purchased snake-proof hunting boots because the internet, only recently coming into wide-scale utility for the dissemination of information, said that March in the Florida Panhandle, where I was attending (or perhaps not attending) college could be notorious for venomous snakes. I bought turkey shells, number-five three inch lead, and a Primos Box Cutter box call, because the internet gurus said that was one of the easier calls to use. I would scour YouTube for video clips of turkeys calling and learned to imitate the sounds I heard with that box call. I went to the woods every afternoon to scout for turkey sign. I began to learn a world totally unknown to me before.
The first time I went into the woods toting a gun, mere weeks after completing my required hunter safety course, I went with those friends from my fraternity who were responsible for introducing me to a lifelong addiction and got to an area where we found fresh sign when scouting before the season opener. We reached a crossroads in the trails. I cut a series of yelps from that Primos Box Cutter. I was met with response from a bellowing, baritone gobbler who I didn’t know at the time would lead to a whole lot of frustration and failing grades in school that semester.
I hunted that gobbler for fourteen days straight. Every morning, he would gobble on the roost and stay gobbling from that time until the 1:00 PM cutoff for hunting on public land. I researched every method I could to try to kill him. I added a mouth call and a Primos Jackpot slate call to my arsenal. I added a hen decoy. I flushed him twice trying to run and gun to get closer to him.
